Description:
Beginning March 1 and continuing through April 30, 2022, Salmagundi art collection presents Lalique & Mucha : drawing inspiration, a window into two of the world’s leading luxury designer’s drawings and their inspiration. The exhibition features the largest collection of Lalique drawings outside of France by jewelry and glass designer Rene Lalique and the foundational drawings of Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha’s Documents Decoratifs (1901).
The Lalique collection consists of 41 drawings and sketches covering works by the iconic designer Rene Lalique. Lalique planned and presented client’s his ideas for jewelry designs using the ink on parchment drawings from about 1894-1910. The works provide a window into the underlying geometry, nature inspiration and thought process of the artist.
Alphonse Mucha [NRA 1922], a member of the Salmagundi Club from 1922 until his death was a friend and competitor to Lalique. In 1901, Mucha developed a drawing guide for student artists in the form of a book of Art Nouveau motifs consisting of 72 plates. Documents Decoratifs (1901) will be presented alongside his friendly competitor Lalique’s drawings uncovering the similarities and differences in the two artist’s approaches and themes.
The show will be accompanied by a lecture from scholar and art dealer, Mark Waller. Waller, who loaned the collection of Lalique master drawings for this exhibition will be presenting his new research into the connection between Lalique and French artist Georges Seurat. The lecture Rene Lalique and Georges Seurat : light in common will expound on similarities between Seurat’s light theories and Lalique’s own obsession with glass and light.
Nick Dawes, our current Salmagundi Chairman & CEO and Lalique expert will be presenting the lecture The flora and fauna of Rene Lalique in our Parlor gallery April 21, 2022.
