About the Talk

Join Carl Raymond, host of The Gilded Gentleman history podcast for a conversation with writer, producer and actor James Scully for a historical look at New York City in 1835 and the devastating fire that changed the city’s history.  Through his production company, The WallBreakers, James has created an acclaimed (Tribeca Audio 2022 Official Selection) on-going docu-podcast, Burning Gotham, that dramatizes the story and presents the intrigue and the history in a theatrical and compelling way for modern audiences.

James will discuss the actual history –  for example, what New York was like in the early part of the 19th century as well as the origins and repercussions of the fire.  In addition, he’ll share just how he brings it all to vivid life as audio drama with characters we know such as John Jacob Astor, Aaron Burr, Eliza Jumel and even he courtesan Helen Jewett along with some fictional character creations.

Carl and James will discuss as well how the modern world of podcasts can be thought of as a throwback to one of James’ areas of expertise and passion – old-time radio.

There will be an interview and audience Q&A, followed by a reception featuring afternoon tea with sweet and savory treats.

Dress is business casual.
