About the Event
Join long-time member and previous Salmagundi Library chair Alexander Katlan for a talk about the formation and the early years of the Salmagundi Club from 1871 to 1917. This includes the formation of the Club’s early public exhibitions that were open to local artists and will cover the interaction of the Club with early artists and the art community within Greenwich Village at the time.
Trace the history of the locations of Salmagundi Club as it moved from local village studios to the later (rented) clubhouses, such as the 5th Avenue location we know it for today. Explore the early art studio environment that used to take place in the village. Attendees will see examples of Salmagundi Club art from the Club’s historical archives; rarely seen by the public. After the discussion, there will be the chance to ask questions in a Q&A!
Get your copy of a rare book
As a fund raiser for the Smith (Salmagundi) Library, the out-of-print and rare book The Black and White Exhibitions of the Salmagundi Sketch Club 1878 to 1887 by Alex Katlan will be available for purchase at the event, at a discounted price (credit card only) from $29.95 to $20 for non-members and only $10 for members.
The book delves deeply and comprehensively into the works and artists involved in our Black and White shows – some of the most important exhibitions in New York in that decade, and reported heavily in the era’s press.
