About the Concert

The Tempest String Quartet presents “Reimagined,” featuring works by Erwin Schulhoff and Ludwig van Beethoven. Come and hear the curious and twisted ways in which Schulhoff reinvents familiar dance forms from five different countries in his Five Pieces for String Quartet. This will be followed by Beethoven’s beloved “Harp” Quartet, Op. 74, in which Beethoven recreates the sound of a harp using the string quartet instruments!

About the Quartet

Founded in 2017 at the New England Conservatory in Boston, the Tempest String Quartet was the recipient of the 2018 NEC Honors Ensemble Award as well as first prize at the 4th ENKOR International Chamber Music Competition. All four current members have a long history of playing chamber music together in different constellations and at chamber music festivals such as Four Seasons, Kneisel Hall, Yellow Barn, Holland Music Sessions, and the Perlman Music Program. The quartet has received mentorship from esteemed chamber musicians such as Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, Kim Kashkashian, Peter Salaff, Roger Tapping, Kris Tong, Ayano Ninomiya, and Merry Peckham.

With all members having extensive experience in historical performance practice as well as contemporary music, the ensemble prides itself in the flexibility of their sound, having made it a mission to find a stylistically authentic approach to the wide range of repertoire that it has worked on and envisions to study in the future. The members of the Tempest String Quartet are laureates of many international competitions such as the Paganini, Joseph Joachim, Juilliard and Schadt competitions and have studied with Joel Krosnick, Donald Weilerstein, Miriam Fried, Kim Kashkashian, and Catherine Cho amongst others. Beginning in Fall 2024, the Tempest String Quartet will begin their Quartet Residency at the New England Conservatory of Music under the mentorship of Paul Katz and Nicholas Kitchen.
