Notes:
– Rosenthal recalled of this work : “It was my pleasure in the late September of 1920 to journey to that delightful little town of Old Lyme, Connecticut for the purpose of painting the portrait of J. Carleton Wiggins, for the series of Portraits of Presidents of the Salmagundi Club, which I am assisting in developing. Installed in a comfortable home, pleasantly furnished, in a small and rather somber studio, Wiggins was having a quiet and reposeful existence. During the time he gave me sittings he was telling me all the happenings that loomed large in his life. . . . Wiggins is a simple-minded, sincere man, unspoiled and unsuspicious; doing always the best he can in his work; open, direct and honest in his relations with his fellows.”
