Description of work:
The decorative door panels integrate with the room and accentuate the library’s architecture. In a nod to Salmagundi member Louis Comfort Tiffany, I will create trompe l’oeil paintings in oil giving the appearance of stained glass that will feel transparent and illuminated throughout.

The symbolism of the two figures play on the relationship between Knowledge and Wisdom. Their poses demonstrate the dichotomy and distinction between knowledge and wisdom.

These compositional color sketches are intended to approximate the effect of the overall aesthetic. The final size panels will be highly resolved and finished to a level demonstrated by the head and figure studies provided, as well as shown in my oil paintings in general.

The figures will be on either side of the entrance, facing into the library to seemingly invite people to enter.

Head study of Knowledge
The drawing and painting of the head of the Knowledge figure demonstrate more accurately the level of finish and resolution for the final panel. The expression is meant to be grave and serious.

Oil Sketch of Wisdom
The oil study of the Wisdom figure demonstrates the color and paint quality to be expected on final panel. The more active pose is intended to contrast with the Knowledge figure.

Knowledge
He holds a book, somewhat stoically, and holds forth speaking. Knowledge has often been represented by a male figure such as Apollo.

Wisdom
She turns to the side, more dynamic, and exposes ear to listen. Wisdom has often been represented by a female figure such as Athena.

Corner “Rosettes” The corners of each panel will have squares with a rosette-like design using the Salmagundi Club logo, red on yellow.
