Description of work:
This George Wharton Edwards pen and ink drawing, Across the Fields, was shown in the Salmagundi Black and White Exhibition of 1883. The work, small in size, exhibits Edwards’ skill with linework. Cross-hatching is kept to a minimum while still establishing shadow and depth. The artist’s use of an unusual linear hatching which takes a turn to become the background near the figure is a fascinating use of texture and separation.
