Description of work:

George Wharton Edwards was celebrated in his day as a talented painter, book illustrator and etcher for his depictions of picturesque American and European scenes. So popular were his location etchings, that he illustrated and authored several travel books including: Holland of today, Spain, and Vanished halls and cathedrals of France, which the Salmagundi library owns copies in the collection.

This plate was included in the Salmagundi Sketch Club portfolio of etchings published in 1881. Edwards was one of thirteen Club members who contributed to the first and only such portfolio which was inspired with commercial ambitions. The portfolios, which contained twenty different etchings, were introduced at the Club’s December 1881 exhibition and sold for $20.00. Edwards’ etching at the show, received very favorable notice with the press, with one New York Times reviewer touting it as the best of the portfolio.
