Description of work:
Henry Benjamin Wechsler was an American painter and book illustrator. He studied in Munich at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and, at the Academie Julian in Paris. Wechsler was an illustrator for magazines including Life and the Ladies Home Journal. But, he is most known for his book illustration work including Heroes of our war with Spain told for a boy by Clinton Ross, 1898, and fifty illustrations for Phroso by Anthony Hope in 1897.
Wechsler had a tumultuous life including a separation from his wife. Distraught by the break up she killed herself in 1894 leaving their six year old son without a mother. Wechsler died on March 18, 1935 in relative obscurity.
