Gift of the artist.
Primarily a painter of coastal marines, Venetian canals, quiet roads and tranquil riverbanks, in both oil and watercolor, the ruggedness of this Andalusian scene seems unusual in Henry Pember Smith’s oeuvre. Yet even so, the exquisite quality of his career. Perhaps it is also the ruggedness of the landscape that makes this work, and others painted of the region, stand out from the crowd of his “gentler” offerings.
Smith’s Spanish scenes received recognition in the press, especially those exhibited at the American Water Color Society in 1897 such as Street in Seville, Spain and Mountain Village, Andalusia, Spain with the first being compared to Corot and the latter as “one of the best works his able brush has yet produced.” Another Spanish work titled “In Andalusia,” resides in the collection of the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, CA.
