Description of work:

Hubert von Herkomer was a painter, illustrator, engraver, early pioneering film director and composer. As a child Herkomer did not attend regular school but worked with his father, a wood-carver. The artist grew up very poor and his mother would teach music lessons to earn extra income. Herkomer studied at several schools including the Royal College of Art in London. By age thirty-four, he founded and directed his own school, the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire, from 1883 to 1904.

Herkomer was most known for his etchings of people and children. This work, a print of an original etching, was created on portable equipment during a camping trip to Wales in the summer 1879 with his young children, Siegfried and Elsa. The artist considered this etching his best he ever produced, even while struggling with what he considered a toy-like press.
