Description of work:

John Francis Murphy was an American landscape painter who blended traditional theories of landscape picture-making with more contemporary ideas of his day. He grew up in New York State and eventually created the Pakatakan Artist Colony.

Murphy travels in Dresden, located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, during September 1881 yielded a number of drawings of which this is one. A total of seven dating from September 8th to the 15th were represented in the catalog of the sale at the American Art Association. Two of these, “Seneca Lake, Dresden” (lot 29) and “No Walnuts”, Dresden” (lot 140) were drawn the same day as this work.  (BM 10/29/09)
