Description of work:
In 1871, sculptor Jonathan Scott Hartley began bringing together a group of friends, family and fellow artists to his Broadway studio. They would meet once a week and draw and critique each other based on a theme. The group would be called the Salmagundi Sketch Club. Later when the group formalized in 1877, they became the Salmagundi Club. Hartley’s brother, also an artist, was the organization’s first president from 1871 until 1888. Jonathan Scott Hartley would sever as President of the Club from 1903 to 1905.
During the 1870s, Hartley began executing a series of busts for which he is best known. In 1891, he sculpted the portrait bust of artist Thomas Moran, a fellow Salmagundian seen here.
