The Salmagundi library committee, under chair Alexander W Katlan, present the winning competition entry for the library door commission which celebrate the 150th-year anniversary of the organization. The two allegorical figured painted-panels will be installed on the inside-facing doors of the library. The winning artist, Noah Buchanan’s color and compositional studies will be on exhibition in the library in Noah Buchanan : library studies from October 17 to November 19, along with his final installed winning door entry.
The competition was open to all Salmagundi members and was judged by a panel of top artists including: Jacob Collins, Salmagundi President and Director of Grand Central Academy, Jordan Sokol and Amaya Gurpide, Co-directors of Lyme Art Academy, Robert Telenick of the Art Students’ League of New York, and Steven Assael, top American Realist painter. Artists were asked to submit a color study, examples of their finished works and a description of their allegorical figures to the jury for review. The competition brief requested allegorical figures in the design as well as architectural or decorative backgrounds for the two 66 x 23 panels.
Buchanan graciously donated all of his color and compositional studies from his prize winning entry to the Salmagundi permanent art collection. These works and several from his upcoming show at Darcia Gallery, New York, will be on display in the library.
