Notes:

Gift of the Henrietta Haller, the artist’s sister.

This work was a gift of Henrietta Haller, the sister of the artist, who along with Blum’s long-time friend and executor, William J. Baer, Esq., distributed his estate. Baer’s instructions were to select “any or all of the most valuable and instructive of his works or studio effects for presentation to various incorporated art institutions.” To help him in this task he sought the assistance of Frederick Dielman, president of the National Academy of Design; John LaFarge, president of the Society of American Artists; John George Brown, president of the American Watercolor Society; R. Swain Gifford, art director of the Cooper Institute; and J. H. Gest, director of the Cincinnati Museum Association. That Salmagundi should be the recipient of this work, as well as some of Blum’s etchings, shows just how highly regarded this organization was in the art community. The painting, visible in this photograph in the collection of the Glenbow Museum, shows Carl Rungius and other Salmagundians dressed in full cowboy garb during Rungius’ solo exhibition at the Club in late November 1909. The exhibition coincided with the annual costume party sponsored by J. Sanford Saltus on November 29th, hence the western effects. The others include William J. Hays, Albert L. Groll and an unidentified member.
