Biography:

A native New Yorker, Rose Hartman began her career working for the SoHo Weekly News where her first assignment was covering the 1976 wedding of Hemingway’s granddaughter to restaurateur Jean De Noyer. Since the late 1970’s, she has been documenting cultural icons at galas, exhibition openings, and clubs (most notably Studio 54 where she captured Halston, Carolina Herrera, Truman Capote, Cher, Mick Jagger, Baryshnikov, Lynn Wyatt, and Calvin Klein (to name just a few personalities). Always one step ahead, Hartman was one of the early photographers to document the real excitement behind-the-scenes, capturing the creative personalities who transformed New York into one the most fascinating cities in the world.

“Studio 54: Night Magic” at the Brooklyn Museum had seven of Hartman’s photographs on exhibit (through November 8, 2020). Her images have also been shown at Staley-Wise Gallery, N.Y., the Fashion Institute of Technology, N.Y., Museum Box, Beijing, the National Arts Club, N.Y., Ravestijn Gallery, N.Y., the Museum of the City of New York, Pucci Gallery, N.Y., Edelman Arts, N.Y., the Selects Gallery online (theselectsgallery.com), Throckmorton Gallery/AIPAD, N.Y., and many more.

Hartman’s photos have been published worldwide in the NY Times, Vogue (French, U.S., Italian), Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, Elle, Allure, Marie Claire, the London Times, W, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, the Daily Beast, Panorama, DNR, Grazia, W, Le Journal de la Photographie, Colette, etc.

As a guest lecturer, she has presented her photos at Sotheby’s Art Institute, the New School for Social Research, the International Center of Photography, the NY Public Library, School of Visual Arts, the University Club, Chiat-Day Advertising agency. Hartman is available to give talks via Zoom or in person. Her work is in the private collections of Saks Fifth Avenue, Ralph Lauren, Ralph Rucci, Mary McFadden, the Patterson Museum, Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall, Paul Wilmot, among others.
