About the Exhibition

Launch of new year round photography show options opening on club’s second floor.

NEW YORK, New York – Beginning October 10 until November 4 of 2022, Salmagundi will present New York State of mind : invitational Photography on 2 launch for the newly prepared photography galleries located on the second floor of Salmagundi’s historic townhouse.  The New York City-centric invitational show will be the first of a series of art photography shows that will occur year round.

“Our photography members have been an important part of our club membership and its history,” says William “Bill” Eric Indursky, Curator & Executive Director of Salmagundi, “Traditionally we had only had one or two shows dedicated to photography with the inclusion of the media in some additional shows.  Now we will be able to offer our photo members a dedicated space where shows happen year round.”

Salmagundi had included the medium of photography in their shows since at least 1976 and in the 1980s, photography members helped bolster the clubs diminishing member numbers.  Today the club has about 1,200 members in the US and world-wide.

Photography on 2 includes three of the second floor rooms of the townhouse including: the Hartley Gallery, a newly renovated and decorated room previously used to hold board meetings, the landing and hall outside the library called the Bridge Gallery, stripped and repainted for the occasion and the Moran Gallery, a room that artists members and non-members may rent to hold their own small art shows.  The spaces will receive the addition of new lighting later this year.

“The newly dedicated spaces on our second floor will offer photographers a New York, Manhattan, Fifth Avenue location to show photography.  Members’ work will primarily be used for each show with the addition of select invitational and open-show framework for some others throughout the year,” Indursky says.

New York State of mind will feature five invited non-member top photographers known for their New York scenes.  Artists include iconic photographer, Ruth Orkin (1921-1985) [NM], New York club photographer, Meryl Meisler (b.1951) [NM], 1980s street and celebrity photographer, Amy Arbus (b.1954) [NM], author of three books on alternative process photography, Jill Enfield (b.1954) [NM] and Cody S Brothers the lone man in the exhibition sharing places in New York.

All the photography in the exhibition and sale is black and white and includes people, scenes and locations in New York City from about 1945 to today.  Works begin at about $800 and range up to $10,000 USD.
