Shirley “Shirl” Kathryn (Roudebush) Smithson (1920-1999) [NRA 1991-1999] was an American Realist painter and Representational art advocate.   She was born September 28, 1920 in Chicago, IL to lumber worker William Harvey Dewey Roudebush (1898-1954) and Corrine Madeline (Lillis) Roudebush (1896-1962).   She married fellow Chicagoan, Frank Alfred Smithson (1919-1998) on September 6, 1941.

During her early training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, Smithson had a bad experience with a teacher.  During drawing class, the teacher knocked her pencil from her hand and told her she needed to draw the feeling of the bird and not an actual bird.  After this experience, Smithson would begin to advocate tirelessly for traditional oil painting and its techniques in America.

In 1991, she founded the Oil Painters of America (OPA) which was based on the perceived need for preserving traditional oil painting techniques. As an organization, the OPA stresses rendering (drawing), color mixing and composition, as well as a strong emphasis on the use of light in oils.  The organization still continues today with approximately 4,000 members worldwide.

Smithson wrote a book on Chinese representational artist Zhiwei Tu (1996).  She was a member of the Oil Painters of America, Chicago, IL, of which she was the founder and the Salmagundi Club, New York, NY.

Her own art was of still-life, florals, genre scenes, landscapes and all varies of representational art but she will likely be most known for creating the OPA.
