Biography:

Stephen Early is a classically trained figure and portrait painter from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Stephen has received many awards for his work, including 2017 Semi-Finalist, Figurativas Painting & Sculpture Competition, Barcelona Spain, 2012 Finalist, 14th Annual International Portrait Competition hosted by the Portrait Society of America, “Honorable Mention” in the International 2010-2011 ARC Salon, “Honorable Mention” Salmagundi Club 34th Annual Exhibition, 2011 Finalist, Figure Now/Exhibition at Fontebonne University Fine Arts Gallery, St. Louis, Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art Juried Show and Competition, Scottsdale Arizona, 2010 Certificate of Excellence, 12th Annual International Portrait Competition hosted by the Portrait Society of America, 2008 Certificate of Excellence, 10th Annual International Portrait Competition hosted by the Portrait Society of America, Stephen was commissioned to participate in the project entitled “Star Wars: Visions” by George Lucas. He was also featured as one of the “12 Artists to Watch in 2012”, in the December/January issues of American Artist magazine and is a featured artist in the Spring 2011 issue of American Painter Video Magazine.

Early has exhibited his work nationally at the Principle gallery, Gallery 1261-Denver, Manitou Galleries-Santa Fe, S.R. Brennen Fine Art, Egeli gallery, Dacia Gallery NY, Freeman’s Auction house, Adam Cave Fine Art, Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art, The Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio, Forbes Magazine Gallery in New York City, and the Union League of Philadelphia, among others. His work is also included in many private collections.

After studying with Mr. Shanks at the Art Students League NY, Stephen has been a principal instructor of the core program at Nelson Shanks’s school Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, since it’s inception in 2003. In 2018 Stephen has recently had the opportunity to teach a figure painting class at the Art students league. He has been an integral part of teaching and designing the  Intensive and Advanced Painting Workshops at Studio Incamminati; Armory Arts Center Workshops in West Palm Beach, FL; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Workshop, and the New York Academy of Fine Arts Workshop. American Artist magazine’s invited him to teach during the “Weekend with the Masters Intensive: New York City.” and San Diego, California. The artist has also established a workshop practice across the country, giving classes in figure painting and form painting at Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier in the San Francisco, The Torpedo Factory Art League in Alexandria, VA, the Queens Gallery in Charlotte, NC, and at Artspace in Raleigh, NC, among others.
