Summer Brings Carnivals and Circuses to New York
152 Year Old Salmagundi to Present Thrills and Chills: Circus and Amusement Photography

NEW YORK, West Village, New York (April 12, 2023) – Beginning April 24 to June 23, 2023, Salmagundi will present Thrills and Chills : Circus and Amusement, a vibrant photography exhibition that captures the adrenaline-fueled excitement of amusement park rides and circus performances. The exhibition is part of the organizations Photography on 2 initiative for year-round shows of photography by Salmagundi members and invited guest artists.
Thrills and Chills : Circus and Amusement features approximately twenty-three select works showcasing the intense and spine-tingling experiences of thrill-seekers and offers a glimpse into the enchanting world of carnivals and circuses. Visitors to the exhibition will be treated to a visual feast of images that evoke the rides and attractions that make our hearts race and palms sweat like Anthony Almeida’s Empress of the Shifting Sand (above) or Carolyn Antonucci’s Flying High (below right).

Salmagundi’s art committee chair, Karene Infranco says, “This exhibition is a celebration of the magic and excitement that circuses and amusement parks bring to our lives. My committee is proud to showcase the works of talented photographers who have captured the essence of these exhilarating experiences.”
The exhibition will be held in the townhouses second floor Bridge and Hartley galleries, featuring a diverse range of works from both established and emerging photographers. This show not only highlights the incredible artistry of the photographers but also aligns with the Club’s long-standing commitment to promoting and supporting their photography members.
Several additional invited artists were asked to add their unique voices to the exhibition including Mariette Pathy Allen (b.1940), a New York fine art photographer known for her gender bending photographs and New York portrait photographer Amy Arbus (b.1954) known for her black and white explorations of New York city and genre scenes. Both photographers are icons in the New York photography scene and will enhance the club’s own offering of member works.
