Hartley Represented: Best Realist Artists Gather
Salmagundi is proud to announce the 2nd Annual Hartley Artist Invitational
NEW YORK, New York (February 21, 2023)– The Salmagundi is proud to announce the 2nd Annual Hartley Invitational, on view in the Skylight Gallery from March 6 through April 1, 2023. This exhibition brings together some of the most eminent contemporary realist artists from around the world, with several top artists showcasing their work at Salmagundi for the first time.
The Hartley Invitational is named after Jonathan Scott Hartley, a renowned sculptor who created marble and bronze sculptures, relief carvings, and portrait busts in a realistic style. He established the Salmagundi Sketch Club, which later became the Salmagundi Club, as a place where artists could come together to sketch and work in a supportive community. This exhibition honors Hartley’s legacy and celebrates the field of representational art, which is often overlooked in today’s art world.
This year’s exhibition features a diverse array of subject matter, media, and techniques, with works ranging from oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings, to photographs, sculptures, and reliefs. The artists in the show have drawn inspiration from a variety of sources, including the natural world, contemporary life, and ancient styles and themes.
The exhibition will feature Luis Alvarez Roure, Daniela Astone, Kathy Anderson, Del-Bourree Bach, Chelsea Bard, Tamalin Baumgarten, Tyler Berry, Kristy Gordon, Liz Haywood-Sullivan, Susan Lyon, Sergio Roffo, Brendan Johnston, Janet Cook, Richard Scott, Susan Lyon, John A. Varriano, Scott Burdick, Patricia Watwood, Zane York, Lisa Lebofsky, Joseph McGurl, Carol Peebles, Mark Shasha, Shauna Finn, Maggie Rose, James Barbour, Marc Dalessio, and Stephen Early, along with many others. This exhibition will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view some of the most exceptional works of art created by an array of talented artists.
Noah Buchanan, the winner of the 150-year anniversary library door competition at Salmagundi, will have a prominent spot in the exhibition. His striking 96 x 70 inch painting, titled Symphony (shown above), will be displayed and is sure to captivate viewers. This piece features 25 figures masterfully painted on one canvas, including a self-portrait that tells a compelling story. Buchanan’s outstanding talent and exceptional work truly showcase the caliber of artists featured in this exhibition.
“We are thrilled to present this year’s Hartley Invitational, which represents some of the finest and most innovative work in contemporary representational art,” said Jacob Collins, Salmagundi’s President. “The artists in this exhibition demonstrate a remarkable range of skill, vision, and technique, and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.”
The 2nd Annual Hartley Invitational is free and open to the public. Viewing hours are 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday, and 1:00 to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.
Salmagundi wishes to express appreciation and gratitude to Lisa Lebofsky from the Alumni Association of the New York Academy of Art for acquainting us with several remarkable realist painters emerging from that institution.
