Description:

Beginning September 27, 2021, and continuing until October 25, 2021, Salmagundi art collection presents Location: Building As Subject, in the pool gallery at its 1853 townhouse on 5th Avenue.  Featuring works from Salmagundi’s permanent art collection, this exhibition provides a unique spotlight on exterior and interior architecture where the architecture plays an important leading role in the subject of the work.

With works dating from the late 1800s to the 1970s, this exhibition captures a period of architecture in places varying from Rome to Morocco to New York City. Notable artists include Morris Henry Hobbs, John Taylor Arms, Eugen Jacob Israel Spiro, Carl Georg Setterberg, Hobart Nichols, and Ralph Fabri, to name a few.

According to Curatorial Committee Chair Bill Indursky, “This show is unusual in its focus on a subject which is rarely the dominant feature of an artwork: architecture. These works demonstrate that buildings can have as much character as figurative subjects.”

The oldest work in the exhibition is titled Old Trinity, Wall Street, an ink on paper etching that was created by Francis “Frank” Marion Gregory (1848-1927) in 1886. This work features a street scene in New York City with the Trinity Church in the background. The Exhibition also showcases a piece titled 1939 World’s Fair by Hobart Nichols, whose works reside in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Gallery of Art.

The mediums vary from watercolor on paper, to oil on canvas, in color and black and white, with some of the pieces being exhibited at Salmagundi for the first time. The Exhibition has been made possible by the generous donations of works from the artists and their benefactors.
