About the Film
This film’s release was timed just before Christmas 1957, but it is not at all ‘merry’ in plot or tone, it was directed by Stanley Kubrick and is now considered an iconic anti-war classic.
The plot? During World War I, commanding officer General Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) orders his subordinate, General Mireau (George Macready), to attack a German trench position, offering a promotion as an incentive. Though the mission is foolhardy to the point of suicide, Mireau commands his own gritty subordinate, Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas), to plan the attack. When it ends in disaster, General Mireau demands the court-martial of three random soldiers in order to ‘save face’.
Critics comment on its use of dramatic, riveting b/w camera work, ‘dolly shots’ of the soldiers moving through the tight, muddy trenches. 1992, the film was deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. Gripping and visually unforgettable. Not to be missed.
Come early to gather in the lower level of the Club and grab a beverage at the legendary Wiggins Bar. Screenings will begin promptly afterwards in the Rockwell gallery.
