About the Film

The Third Man (1949 b/w feature film) directed by Carol Reed, written by Graham Greene. Set in postwar Vienna, Austria, The Third Man is considered one of the greatest films of all time, celebrated for its acting, musical score, and dramatic, atmospheric, black/white cinematography. Staring Joseph Cotten (Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns), who arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime (Orson Welles), only to find him dead. Martins develops a ‘theory’ about Harry’s disappearance after learning of a “third man” present at the time of Harry’s death, running into interference from British officer Maj.

Calloway (Trevor Howard) and falling head-over-heels for Harry’s grief-stricken lover, Anna (Alida Valli). Composer Anton Karas’ title composition “The Third Man Theme” topped the international music charts in 1950.

In 1999, the British Film Institute voted The Third Man the greatest British film of all time.

Come early to gather in the lower level of the Club and grab a beverage at the legendary Wiggins Bar. Screenings will begin promptly afterwards in the Rockwell gallery.

On the day of the screening, those wishing to dine must place their orders prior to the start of the film.

Brought to you by the Salmagundi Program Committee, Club members Barbara Genco and Michael Rosenfeld will be hosting a carefully curated film series. This series is a chance for film enthusiasts to come together at the start of the weekend for a shared cinematic experience. All are welcome to participate in a casual conversation covering a variety of viewpoints.
