About the Event
Join author and historian Jean Zimmerman as she and the Gilded Gentleman, Carl Raymond, discuss the story behind the famous John Singer Sargent portrait, “Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Phelps Stokes.”
“Zimmerman and Raymond will discuss just why this painting was in some ways just as radical as Sargent’s famous Madame X and just who the subjects were and indeed who Sargent was himself at the time he painted it. Sargent captures one of the Gilded Age’s great love stories in a dramatic new way.”

“A friend of the couple commissioned as a wedding gift, a portrait of the young bride from the acclaimed expatriate John Singer Sargent. Initially, the artist selected an evening gown for the sitting, but soon decided to portray Edith Minturn Stokes in sporty daywear with a Great Dane at her side. Her husband had “a sudden inspiration,” he later recalled, when the dog became unavailable, and “offered to assume the role of the Great Dane in the picture. The compelling result was soon regarded as one of Sargent’s most important double portraits.”
