About the Speaker
Phyllis Dillon worked for over 35 years in the fields of textile conservation, textile and costume research, and museum administration and funding. During the 1980s she published research about trade fabrics used by 17th century Wampanoag Indians and articles about conservation treatments and principles. From 1996 she was the main Researcher and Associate Curator of an NEH funded exhibit that explored the history of Jews in the apparel business.
Following that, she produced a film about the garment center shown on PBS called “Dressing America, Tales from the Garment Center” and published an article “The Evolution of the American Garment Industry” in a 2012 book about Jewish entrepreneurial strategies called “Chosen Capital: The Jewish Encounter with American Capitalism” from Rutgers University Press. She will describe her experiences in different jobs at the Metropolitan Museum, The Museum of the American Indian, The Textile Conservation Workshop, NYSCA and the Center for Jewish History with illustrations from six of her publications.
