About the Event

Kick off the 2nd Annual Illustrators: Then and Now show with an evening of charm, wit, and color. Beloved writer and illustrator Maira Kalman joins Bob Morris (The New York Times, The New Yorker) to talk about her new book, Joy, and how she transforms life’s small wonders and occasional sorrows into art.

A group of people sit and stand around a table filled with food, including pies and fruit, with handwritten text about summer and birthdays with cherry pie.

Kalman will share her approach to observing the everyday, embracing the “bittersweet,” and letting color and narrative lead the way. Her wise, witty artworks have appeared on countless New Yorker covers, in dozens of her own books, and in many museums around the world. She was recently honored with the Society of Illustrators Lifetime Achievement Award, and continues to enchant readers of all ages.

A handwritten note about volunteering to make the city sparkle is shown above a painting of two people sitting, one in a green hat and pink coat, beside flowers.

This will be a bright, perceptive, and gently profound conversation you won’t want to miss.
