About the Event

Thanks to two centuries of archaeology, careful study and publication we now know a great deal more about the ancient past in Egypt than anyone did previously. Egyptologists are often asked if, after all this work, there’s anything left to find in Egypt and of course with dozens of research projects working in the field every year, all of them uncovering ’new’ material, the answer is a resounding ‘yes!’.

Even more incredible, however, is the unsettling truth that some of the sites that have been revealed in the last 200 years, have since disappeared again, or been lost completely. This is why documentation of archaeological sites – and publication, and archives – are so important, but it also reminds us that we must not be complacent in assuming that sites will survive without being looked after.

About the Speaker

Anyone interested in Ancient Egypt of Egyptology knows the magic words “Chris” and “Naunton.” A prominent British Egyptologist and author, Chris studied Egyptology at the universities of Birmingham and Swansea, and obtained his PhD. He served as the Director of the Egypt Exploration Society from 2011 to 2019.

Naunton specializes in ancient Egyptian archaeology and history, appearing frequently in outstanding television presentations.

He is known for his contributions to the understanding of ancient Egyptian culture and artifacts, frequently participating in lectures and public discussions about Egyptology. The list of his published work is lengthy.
