The vice president of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and Grant relative visits for a very special event on the Gilded Age. The Coffee House Club is delighted to welcome Ulysses Dietz, distinguished historian, curator of the Newark Art Museum, and the great-great-grandson of President Ulysses S. Grant, for a fascinating evening exploring one of the most colorful periods in American history.
In Dancing on the Edge of the Gilded Age, Dietz combines his lifelong study of the Gilded Age with a deeply personal connection to one of its central figures. Bearing his famous ancestor’s name, he offers a unique perspective on Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia, not simply as historical icons, but as partners whose enduring love story unfolded against the backdrop of a rapidly changing America.
Grant’s presidency, the years of Reconstruction, and the dazzling yet turbulent Gilded Age shaped the nation we know today. Through family history, photographs, and remarkable stories, Dietz brings to life the world of Ulysses and Julia Grant—from the 1820s through the 1880s—revealing the people behind the legend and the extraordinary era they helped define.
