About the Event
Harkening back to the Salmagundi Club’s earlier days as the New York Sketch Club, we host a monthly drawing and painting session on the 4th Tuesday of every month!
This month, we pay tribute to one of the Salmagundi Club’s own: Charles Dana Gibson, historical artist member since 1904 and one of the most celebrated American illustrators of the Gilded Age.
Gibson created the iconic “Gibson Girl”: the defining feminine ideal of the 1890s and early 1900s, whose image graced the pages of Life, Harper’s Weekly, and Scribner’s. Debuting as a visual embodiment of “the new woman” during a time of increasing social mobility in America, the Gibson Girl set the standard for beauty, etiquette, higher pursuits, and independence.
For a night, our model will embody the character of the Gibson Girl, with a classic lace blouse and vintage black skirt. Take this opportunity to work from life and capture the glamor of the Gibson Girl while honoring a piece of the Club’s own history.
Artists must bring their own painting/drawing materials. A few easels will be available, first-come first-serve. Have any questions? This event is organized by Salmagundi artist member John Derenzo.

Ticketed attendees may reserve for dinner in the dining room (a normally member-exclusive benefit) via our Reservations page with the message “Art Session dinner”. Reservations must be made in advance after RSVP-ing.
