About the Event

Harkening back to the Salmagundi Club’s earlier days as the New York Sketch Club, we host a monthly drawing and painting session on the 4th Tuesday of every month!

This month, we draw inspiration from one of the most extensive bodies of self-portraiture in the history of Western art: Rembrandt van Rijn. Over the course of his lifetime, Rembrandt produced more than 80 self-portraits in oil, etching, chalk, and pen and ink. He treated his own face as a readily available tool for artistic exploration, experimenting with elaborate costume, facial expressions, and exercises in the fall of light and shadow across the human face.

In the spirit of Rembrandt’s experimentation, our male model will be dressed and posed in the style of his younger self-portraits: rich period costume and dramatic directional light. Following Rembrandt’s use of chiaroscuro, we encourage you to take the opportunity to use light as a form of sculpture to define the human form and presence of character.

Artists must bring their own painting/drawing materials. A few easels will be available, first-come first-serve.
Have any questions? This event  is organized by Salmagundi artist member John Derenzo.
