About the Event
Join us for a panel discussion, moderated by Annie Shaver-Crandell, as we discuss estate planning for visual artists. How do you spare your heirs from having to hold a huge bonfire of your life’s work? How do you bequeath physical work, copyright, and royalties? Learn how to plan funding for maintenance of your work, everything you need to know about offering your works to an institution, and finding help for these processes!
This talk may also be accessed online via Zoom. To do so, please click on Attend Online at the date and time the event is scheduled to take place.
Hungry?
Grab a bite to eat after the event from our dining room (a normally member-exclusive benefit)! Ticketed attendees who would like to stay for drinks and dinner should make dining reservations in advance via our Reservations page with the message “Estate talk”.
About the Speakers

Annie Shaver-Crandell
Annie Shaver-Crandell, after a first career in academia as a historian of the art and architecture of the Middle Ages, and now Professor Emerita at The City College of New York, is now primarily a practicing painter and monotype artist. Realizing that her second career has generated much more physical residue than her first, she is actively engaged in creating her personal archive and estate-plan. Her intention is to create a series of forums in which other artists and their supporters can become aware of and address some of their own affairs in a timely way.
She is a former member of the Board of Directors of Salmagundi, a Resident Artist member since 2001, an active participant in the club’s monotype parties and co-host of its monthly Argentine tango evenings.

Leendert van der Pool
Leendert van der Pool, born in the Netherlands in 1945, spent fifteen years in the Dutch merchant marine, working on freighters, coasters and salvage ships. His early artwork (1976-1990) reflects the influences of his years at sea, both in subject and in mood.
A self-taught artist specializing in drawings, pastels and oil paintings, Mr. van der Pool has exhibited his work widely in museums and galleries in Europe and since the late 1970s, and, for the past thirty years, in the United States, with recent shows in Chelsea and in a number of European museums and Asia. His drawings have been included in numerous books as well as several museum collections.
In honor of his 65th birthday, Mr. van der Pool was decorated by the Dutch government as a “Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau,” (Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau).

Amy Lehman
Amy Lehman comes to the practice of law after having a long career as a professional ballet dancer before returning to school to get her bachelor’s degree in theater history and dramatic literature from NYU. She studied copyright, trademark, media law while at University of Michigan Law School, where she served as president of the Entertainment, Media and Arts Law Students Association and as an editor of the Journal of Race and Law.
Prior to joining Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts as Director of Legal Services, Amy practiced in New York as a commercial litigator. She is a trained mediator, running VLA’s MediateArt program, and is also on the panel of mediators assigned to resolve cases in the federal court for the Southern District of New York. Amy is a member of the Non-Profit Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association and was selected to Super Lawyers Rising Stars 2014, 2016, 2017 and New York Metro Super Lawyers 2018-2025.

Marc Hajjar
With over 10 years of experience in the fine art and collectibles space as a USPAP compliant appraiser, auction house business development representative, and insurance professional, Marc has deep knowledge of what collectors, artists, and family members need to do to safeguard their property and legacy.
For the last 4+ years, Marc has been the Head of Insurance Services at Hodinkee Insurance Agency – a digital-first, personal lines jewelry and watch insurance agency underwritten by Chubb. Prior to that, Marc worked at auction houses such as Phillips and Sotheby’s in the Trusts, Estates and Appraisals, Finance, and various Operational Departments.
