About the Event

In the fall of 2004, Mr. Hawk spent a month traversing west to east through the mythical kingdom of Bhutan, hidden away high in the Himalayas. Hired to shoot a film documentary, he was given extraordinary access by the royal family.

The journey begins in the far west, the unexplored Haa Valley and ends in the remote east near Tibet. Mr. Hawk, a member of the Explorers Club, had the distinct honor of carrying the Explorers Club flag with him, only permitted when an expedition furthers the causes of exploration and field science.

Hawk will share his non-stop, day to day adventures, experiences, discoveries and valuable lessons learned on this incredible spiritual journey through this last Shangri-La, where the national motto is “Gross National Happiness.” Photographs of dramatic and rarely seen landscapes, stunning Buddhist monasteries and fortresses, ancient religious ceremonies and festivals, the king’s birthday celebration and the lifestyles of the people who inhabit this kingdom will all be highlighted.

Undoubtedly the greatest adventure of Hawk’s adventurous life, this talk will be presented with actual slides using a slide projector. He hopes to inspire others to embrace the timeless beauty and essence of the Himalayas and Bhutan and help protect the wilderness and fragile cultures that still exist there.
