About the Event

Janice Hechter shares her journey to writing and illustrating a new picture book about artist Theresa Bernstein. Hechter will discuss Bernstein’s art and how she beat the odds by becoming a successful working artist, despite living in a time when women’s art was frequently ignored.

Salmagundi members will be delighted to find the Club makes a special appearance in the book, when several of its members pay a surprise visit to Bernstein’s studio. The talk will be introduced by Salmagundi artist member Debbie Wells.

About the Speaker

An award-winning illustrator and fine artist, Janice Hechter has exhibited her paintings in various galleries and museums throughout the country. Hechter’s new picture book, The Power of Her Paintbrush: The Story of Theresa Bernstein was published by Kar-Ben Publishing on March 3, 2026, and has received strong critical acclaim.

She has also illustrated five other picture books, including SCBWI Crystal Kite Award finalist, The Great Elephant Escape, for Pelican Publishing.
