About the Film

(1 hour 59 minutes, 1962)  Well, it IS summer and don’t our minds and hearts inevitably turn to Rome as the epicenter of romance and… well… adventure?

This film is a delicious cultural time capsule of what was considered (sigh) romantic in the early 60s: Vespas! Traveling via ship! Staying in a genteel Roman pensione instead of a hotel! Getting a temp job in a bookshop! Dating Rosanno Brazzi! Listening to hot jazz played by Al Hirt and the actual 1961 Eurovision Song Contest winning song Al Di La sung by Emilio Pericoli himself!

Who better to act as our aspirational role models than Suzanne Pleshette (long before she played Bob Newhart’s long suffering wife on TV) and THE blonde male heart throb (of ca 1962!) Troy Donahue!?!

Pleshette plays Prudence (yes, Prudence) who abruptly leaves her post as a librarian in a supremely stuffy New England girl’s school after a serious kefuffle about a book called “Lovers Must Learn” and goes directly to Italy.

Enjoy lots and lots of truly glorious Roman views, accompanied by random facts of Roman history and culture dropped into casual conversation, punctuated by (relatively, it is ca. 1962) chaste flirting and love making. Seems the growing chemistry between between Prudence and Don (aka Troy) wasn’t just acting. They married soon after. A wonderful summer escape! ‘Godere!’

Come early to gather in the lower level of the Club and grab a beverage at the legendary Wiggins Bar. Screenings will begin promptly afterwards in the Rockwell gallery.

Hungry?

After the film, we’ll move into the Club dining room for a delicious dinner and lively discussion. Ticketed attendees who would love to join us may make a reservation via our Reservations page and include the message “Film Series dinner”. On the day of the screening, those wishing to dine must place their orders prior to the start of the film.
