About the Event

This talk by Eleanor Sypher will dive into the life of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520). Raffaello was a painter and architect who, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, forms the Trinity of the High Renaissance.  He grew up in the civilized Court of Urbino, where his father was Court Painter and where Raphael developed poise and good manners.

These qualities, along with his extraordinary talent, gave him entry to Pope Juilus II.  From 1508 until his death in 1520, Julius II commissioned from him the frescoes in the Vatican.  Pope Leo X continued to favor him,  naming him architect of the New St. Peter’s and giving him authority over all the antiquities in Rome.  His grandeur in depicting the human form combines perfect design and balance.  In the 18th and 19th centuries, art historians gave him precedence over Leonardo and Michelangelo.

About the Speaker

Eleanor Sypher – holding multiple degrees in the Classics, is an immensely popular staple in Salmagundi’s monthly line of program offerings. Every second Thursday of the month, she presents another exploration of art and design history – stemming from ancient times right into the 21st Century.

A group of men in boats gather fish from the water while one man gestures toward another; birds stand in the foreground and buildings are visible in the distant background.
