About the Event
Our ever-popular Eleanor Sypher returns with another of her art history talks; this one exploring the life and work of Diego Velazquez (1599-1660). Trained in Seville, in 1623, he was called to Madrid to paint a portrait of King Philip IV and from then on, only Velazquez could paint the King. His style, therefore, is seen as Aristocratic Baroque. His brushwork and drawing in the royal portraits and in those of the court buffoons becomes broader and more fluid. Velazquez visits Italy twice and paints the Pope. His painting now has evolved to sparkling and free. He unites space and atmosphere in foreground and background, always painting the light.
About the Speaker
Eleanor Sypher, holding multiple degrees in the Classics, is an immensely popular staple in Salmagundi’s monthly line of program offerings. Every second Thursday of the month, she presents another exploration of art and design history – stemming from ancient times right into the 21st Century.
