About the Film
Two decades before The Quiet Man, there was John Ford’s 1935 political thriller The Informer (b/w 91 minutes). Set during the Irish Troubles of the early 1920s and in the years before Irish independence, Victor McLaglen is Gypo Nolan; a desperate Judas who, for 20 pounds, betrays his best friend to Britain’s notorious paramilitary Black and Tans. Consumed by guilt and self-loathing as the hunt for the traitor unrelentingly narrows to expose him, McLaglen’s fear becomes as palpable as the thick Dublin mist swirling around him.
Based on Liam O’Flaherty’s 1925 novel, The Informer was nominated for six Academy Awards, and won four (Best Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay). With a mood and a shabbiness more akin to Carol Reed’s The Third Man than Ford’s own The Quiet Man, the film foreshadows the tearing apart of Ireland that would soon follow the peace settlement with Britain.
A magnificent stage Irishman – can anyone guess McLaglen’s real native land? This is an early-career Ford gem; not to be missed!
Come early to gather in the lower level of the Club and grab a beverage at the legendary Wiggins Bar. Screenings will begin promptly afterwards in the Rockwell gallery.
