Notes:
Dante H. Bertoni was a US Navy artist, creating, among other works, illustrations for the Proceedings magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute. In the envelope affixed to the backing paper, there are a set of typed descriptions (see photos) of works that Bertoni had made in 1979-1980, including a painting hung in the Executive Office Building at the White House by Admiral Stansfield Turner, then of the CIA. The work offered here is a watercolor of a ridge, the Western CWM, above the Khumbu Glacier on the slope of Mount Everest. The watercolor shows one of the climbing camps en route to the summit. Taped to the back of the frame is a letter from Bertoni to the individual who bought the painting from the artist. It is unclear whether either Bertoni or the purchaser were climbers or had been to the Everest region. Since many years ago I hiked up to the Base Camp, I can vouch for the general accuracy of the depiction. The metal frame is in all likelihood that which was originally used to frame the watercolor. The glass has gone missing over the years. If there is a buyer who does not want the frame, I would be willing to remove the painting from the frame and send it in the mat and with the associated documentation. This watercolor is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints and art that I sell are not “reproductions”. For example, offered maps are of the period. Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping. Dante H.
