Biography:

David M. Band, Artist, Conservator, Collector, Dealer at The Baker Gallery, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in art.

With a deep love and appreciation for art stemming from childhood, Mr. Band and his family members knew he would become an artist. He has spent a significant part of his career at The Baker Gallery in Lubbock, Texas. The highlight of Mr. Band’s career was working with the gallery, whose owners were using magazine advertisements to promote art that was for sale. He was stunned to see they were selling art from major American artists and institutions, so he started collecting art from them. Two years later, Mr. Band mentioned to the gallery director, Robbie Vestil, that he painted and Mr. Vestil asked him to send him photos of his work. A few days later, Mr. Band received a call requesting him to send his work to The Baker Gallery, which immediately began selling some of his work. Through The Baker Gallery, Mr. Band met some of the finest artists at the National Academy of Design in New York who gave him information, helped him, and guided him, which helped lead Mr. Band to winning awards.

The awards Mr. Band has won include, but are not limited to, the Loring W. Coleman Award for Watercolor at the Annual Exhibition of the Allied Artists of America, Inc., in 2011, the John N. Lewis Memorial Award at the 127th Annual Members’ Exhibition of the Salmagundi Club in 2010, and the Samuel O. King Cash Award for prints and the Samuel O. King Award for watercolor, both from the Springfield Art Museum in 2008. As a testament to his success, he holds membership with organizations such as the Allied Artists of America, Audobon Artists Inc., The National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club, and The Baker Gallery of Fine Art in Texas, among others. Though he is proud of his awards and memberships, Mr. Band is proud of not taking himself seriously and for pursuing the intangible joy and fulfilment that is inherent in art.

In addition to his work as an artist, Mr. Band served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1987. He spent time at the Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, and in the Hospital Squadron at the Sheppard Air Force Base at Wichita Falls, Texas. He recently judged an art show in early April and will participate in another show in early Fall. MR. Band is grateful to his mentor Mr. Pasquale Tranquillo and to all those who have helped him in his journey. As a further testament to his success, Mr. Band has been featured in the 57th and 56th editions of Who’s Who in America and the seventh and eighth editions of Who’s Who in American Education.
