Biography:

For the past thirty years I have devoted myself to the practice of psychiatry, a career which has felt like a calling, and to raising my two children. In mid-life, I found myself inexplicably returning to an early childhood passion—drawing. I decided to try out oil painting by taking a plein air workshop in Vermont taught by Thomas Torak, a faculty member of the Art Students League of NY. Tom was an extremely encouraging teacher with invaluable words of wisdom: ”Paint what excites you.” I fell in love that summer with plein air painting as it allowed me to express my deep emotional response to nature and to the beauty of the pastoral landscape of New England with a paintbrush. This experience dramatically changed my life.

From that point on I have thrown myself into the study and practice of landscape oil painting. I have been primarily influenced by the American tonalists with their moody depiction of the transitional times of day, as well as their soft palettes and gentle rendering of light and atmosphere. Among the tonalists I have been most influenced by are J. Francis Murphy, Isaac Levitan and George Inness.

One of the main inspirations for my work has been the landscape of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. This open, expansive and underdeveloped region evokes in me a feeling of remoteness and tranquility that I seek to capture in my work.
