Biography:
John Michael Pelech was born in New York City, received a B.S. from N.Y.U. and a B.F.A. from School of Visual Arts in Media Arts. He studied design with Milton Glaser and worked in commercial television and video as a Director of Photography and MTV cameraman during the start-up years 1981-1984. He worked with avant garde artists: Nam June Paik, Peter Gabriel and Laurie Anderson also Lighting Director on Zbigniew Rybczyński’s magnum opus “Steps”. Received a Monitor Award for lighting design. He appeared in American Cinematographer Magazine and collaborated on a video which is part of the MoMA Permanent Collection. While at CBS News, he was a member of the Emmy Award winning team in 2013 for the live coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing; his first of two Emmys.
Michael explores the day-to-day visual cacophony of New York City. He has also been a panelist at The Griffin Museum of Photography 2020. His work is in private collections and been in group shows: Amanda Smith 2017, Karyn Mannix Contemporary 2021, New York Center for Photographic Art 2021 – 2022, Foley Gallery, Max Planck Institute and the Salmagundi Club, N.Y. exhibitions and auction 2019 – 2022.
He lives in the East Village of New York City and is currently developing his fine art photography practice while trying to expand the visual vocabulary of photography.
