Biography:
Joy Makon is a painter of observed life, creating watercolors based on locations and moments that she sees through everyday activities. Joy’s richly detailed paintings capture the light, textures and vibrant color that she finds from walking around viewing scenes both well-known and intimate. What her works have in common is a desire to draw the viewer in through dynamic compositions that have beauty and strength in presentation. With a fascinating combination of labor-intensive details and impressionistic watercolor passages, the paintings engage the viewer to consider the quotidian realism of her subjects.
Joy Makon has a BFA in graphic design and photography from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia. Her work is held in private collections and has been shown in juried and gallery shows including the American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, The American Artists Professional League, and the Adirondacks National Exhibit of American Watercolors. In 2021, Joy became a signature member of the American Watercolor Society. She has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers and the Society of Illustrators, for her work as a magazine art director. She is a member of artist-run 440 Gallery in Brooklyn, NY and frequently shows work there.
A native of Philadelphia, PA, Joy has lived in NYC since 1976. Her studio is located in a 110-year-old Brooklyn home that she shares with her husband Solomon, her feline studio manager Lily, and two gardens.
