Statement from the Artist:
Over the last twenty years, my work has evolved from fashion illustration as an apparel designer into contemporary realist watercolor portraiture as a fine artist.
The fashion illustration, created around 2000, reflects my background in fashion design and my early interest in gesture and clothing design. At the time, I was less focused on realism and more interested in expressing attitude through line, proportion, and simplified forms. The figures are stylized and elongated, suggesting mood and gesture rather than detailed observation.
In contrast, Winter Watercolor reflects my development through two decades of painting and disciplined observation. While the painting is grounded in realism, many of the same visual interests remain. I still focus on gesture, composition, color relationships, and expressive brushwork. However, these elements are now shaped by a deeper study of anatomy, light, and observation. Rather than creating an idealized figure, I am painting a specific and personal moment. In this work, the subject is myself, captured in my studio while painting and fully immersed in the creative process. Winter Watercolor carries a greater sense of emotional and psychological complexity, reflecting both personal experience and years of artistic growth.
Together, these works show a progression rather than a complete change in direction. The fashion illustration reveals the foundation of my visual language, while Winter Watercolor demonstrates how that language developed through years of watercolor portraiture. Looking at them side by side, I see a continuing connection between design, mood, and observation, as well as between stylized interpretation and a more direct study of people and myself.
