ABOUT THE ARTIST

Andreja Vuckovic is a classically trained sculptor based in Wellington, New Zealand, with a Master’s Degree in sculpting. He has over 22 years of experience in which his career expanded to the film industry thanks to his talent, not just with practical sculpting, but with digital sculpting as well. He has worked on over 30 blockbuster movies in the past 14 years, among them being “The Hobbit trilogy”,” Avatar”, “Alita: Battle Angel”, “The Adventures of Tintin” and “Avengers”. He was nominated twice, consecutively, for the prestige Annie Award (2015 and 2016) for his work on the Hobbit movies: “The Desolation of Smaug” (for the title digital character “Smaug”) and “The Battle of the Five Armies” (for working on various digital characters). Back in his home town of Belgrade, Serbia, Andreja has permanent public sculptures; some have also found homes in private collections around the world. His interest lies mainly in figurative sculpting, both in traditional as well as digital forms. He participated in many international Fine Arts exhibitions. Currently, he is working in WetaFX – a leading company for visual effects – as a Senior Facial Modeller (digital sculptor) alongside working as an independent artist and traditional sculptor in his parallel career; doing portraits, figures and fantastical creatures.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a well-known sculptor who lived during the 19th century, is depicted above. He said something that I have always believed to be true:

“The imagination must be able to bring up the scenes, incidents, that impress us in life, condense them, and the truer they are to nature the better .. .”

His sculptural work embodied American Renaissance ideals. He is best known for his public sculptures such as the Standing Lincoln and his famous reliefs.

In this portrait, I wanted to depict him in the style of 19th century French sculpture because he was trained to sculpt in Europe and comes from a French-Irish family.

Almost all of his portraits and statues contain dynamic movement, a concept which I incorporated into this portrait as an homage to his work; the position of his neck adds movement to an otherwise static pose, exemplifying his spirit and inquisitiveness.

The base matches the bust and is done in a classical style.

In relief, I placed Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ signature and the Salmagundi logo on the front of the base.
