Statement from the Artist:
The one thing both these works from my artistic career have in common is the subject of a Black woman. I actually created the "African Dress" woman at an all day Paint with the Masters workshop, set up by Tim Newton., at the Salmagundi Club. I was in a room where we had a Black Woman model standing by the fireplace.. There were also models posing in other rooms of the Club.
I have specialized in Watercolor painting since 1980, following a professional practice, winning awards, exhibiting nationally, over the years. My second entry is a mixed media piece. I find that using hand painted papers where I craft my own colors and combine them with wc painting, stretches my imagination in fruitful ways. When I cut up an old wc of mine for the flower garden and ring taped it on, I decided to adhere it in relief, to give the art a shadow look. The ground is Arches 140 lb. watercolor paper. I have always painted gardens and portraits of people. I like experimenting and my natural sense for design and flat patterns is evident in both works.
