Statement from the Artist:

My first wood cut was a very small image of a bull representing Taurus, my astrological sign. It was done in my high school art class.

I discovered the joy of printmaking, both linocuts and woodcuts, and did many more works on paper. The older entry in this pairing is of my largest woodcut of the very ornate radiator in my first apartment in Pittsburgh, printed a few years after that school class.

In 2010, I had my first experience doing monotypes when Sharon Way-Howard brought her portable press to Salmagundi Club for an evening of printmaking. Though I liked the tightly carved design work I did on linoleum blocks and in wood, monotypes were a much more immediate experience. We were creating an image to print within a 3 hour session. I often say that I hope the press will be kind, because there is the variable of printing a plate that is not etched. The artist gets one print – a monotype.

“3 Sheets to the Wind” was done at our very last Salmagundi Club monotype party held June 2, 2026. I believe I have met the challenge of this process and now have the confidence of an expert. Looking forward to the day our parties resume.
