In 2002 I joined The Art Students League of New York’ class of Nelson Shanks. Nelson was my only teacher and mentor. I studied for a period of six years approximately. As Nelson got more involved with his school in Philadelphia (Studio Incamminati) his presence at the League became more scarce so I started to attend as many life painting demonstrations (by him) I could possibly do. His persona was so powerful and his way of getting his message across had no parallel. I became obsessed with his approach and I studied his work closely. After his passing, I have reflected upon those years and have realized the monumental impact his preachings had in my life and my formation. I have said before that seeing him paint was a revelation and a turning point in my development as an artist.
