Papollon ailes ouvertes [Open wings butterfly], ca.1895-1906.
Gouache on BFK-Rives vegetable parchment
11 x 8.6 inches

A butterfly hand mirror design of extended-triangular form, the outstretched wings enclosing the lower mirrored section, the butterfly body tapering downwards to form the handle. It is interesting to note that an original Boudoir Mirror Papillons, most probably executed from this design, is known to be in a private collection, London, England. The mirror is finished beautifully in silver, horn, and god enamel, the back monogrammed with ‘E st. G [Elizabeth Saint George]’ and sits in an accompanying calf-skin box lined with silk and suede.
