Statement from the Artist:
Arizona was completed in 1976 when I was 18 and a senior in High School. I had never been to Arizona and painted this using a picture from a magazine as reference. I added the boulder in the foreground from imagination. I painted blades of grass as I was unfamiliar with the desert terrain and only painted what I imagined the ground cover to be.
Sonoran Saguaro was created in 2021 when I was 63 years old. It was my first painting shown at the Salmagundi Club as a non-member in the 2024 AAPL Grand National Exhibition. I went to college after high school, and received my BFA from Northern Arizona University. I lived in Flagstaff, Arizona for six years. I now live in New Jersey in the same town where I attended high school, the place where I did my first oil painting. I have gone back to Arizona almost every year and have much more knowledge of the landscape which has become one of my favorite subjects to paint.
